Turkey will wipe out YPG - Turkish PM
Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım told an assembly of civil society organisations on Thursday that his government would wipe out the remnants of the Kurdish-majority People’s Protection Units (YPG), Hürriyet newspaper said.
“Now the west of the Euphrates has been completed, what will happen to the east? The east will be the same,” Yıldırım said.
“We can never live nose-to-nose with terrorism. We will not allow this. America could be behind it, it makes no difference.”
Turkey successfully fought the YPG in the western Syrian region of Afrin earlier this year, claiming to have killed over 4,000 fighters and gained control of the territory.
The Turkish government considers the YPG a particular threat to the country as it is a sister-group to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a militant Kurdish group that is fighting to secure an autonomous region in Turkey’s southeast.
Turkey’s insistence to the United States on the issue of the YPG leaving Manbij, a region of Syria to the west of the Euphrates that is presently in YPG hands, was gradually leading to a solution, Yıldırım added.
Recent economic troubles had been provoked by the foreign sponsors of a religious movement led by an exile preacher in Pennsylvania, the Fethullah Gülen movement, Yıldırım said.
The movement, which the government calls the Fethullahist Terror Organisation (FETÖ), is also said to have had a role in a failed coup in July 2016.
“The gossip, lies, and scenarios about our economy in recent days are all the plots and plans of this FETÖ mastermind,” Yıldırım said.
“The dirty plots they play have not brought this nation to its knees in the past, and they will never succeed from now onwards, either.”
